Transition to School
Transitioning to Primary Education
For children aged four and five who plan on going to school the following year, we offer multiple ways to support families in their transition. Trendi Tots Kindergarten liaises with our local primary schools to provide our families with updated and current information about the schools philosophy, facilities, teaching methods, extra curricular activities and more. Our teachers collaborate with families and their elected school to provide any necessary information to help schools better understand children’s individual developmental needs and interest as we feel that this partnership will assist in supporting children as they enter their new learning environment. Our program at Trendi Tots Kindergarten uses fun activities and games which focuses on supporting children to work independently, collaborate with peers, negotiate working spaces, problem solve, and develop other aspects of social and emotional competence required to commence formal schooling. In addition, our program considers content found in the Early Stage One (Kidnergarten) curriculum and explores academic concepts including phonics, reading comprehension, rhyming, patterning, subtraction and addition, measurement as well as creative arts, STEM and more.
Social and Emotional Readiness
Preparing for formal schooling can often be an anxious yet exciting time for families. At Trendi Tots Kindergarten, we consider school preparation essential in assisting to build the foundations to lifelong learning and in ensuring that our children have the best start to formal education. Our program focuses on building social and emotional dispositions such as self confidence, resilience, independence, self-esteem and social competence which are all integral skills to have at school and beyond. We support children as they grow and adopt these qualities as part of their identity, allowing them to develop a sense of belonging with their peers as well as maintain and celebrate their individuality. Recognising their strengths, becoming resilient and self-assured and developing confidence within their friendships prepares children to transition to a new learning and social environment and allows families to feel more at ease as their child takes the next step in their education.
As well as assisting in strengthening social and emotional skills, the experiences we present to our children are intended to extend and challenge them at a developmentally appropriate level. Trendi Tots Kindergarten places academic learning in all aspects of our program and practice. Skills such as reading, writing, counting and drawing are encouraged from moment a child arrives at the centre to the time they say goodbye at the end of the day. Our teachers believe in the importance of a hands on approach to academic learning through spontaneous discovery times, planning multiple experiences, group projects and discussions which explore these concepts in a fun and engaging way. These activities are presented with more complexity as children get older and have a deeper understanding of a variety of concepts explored through our preschool program. To support children academically, our preschool program is influenced by the Board of Studies Australian Curriculum as well as the Early Years Learning Framework. The program is led by our Directors and Education Leaders who are trained as a primary school and early childhood teachers. The program is enriched with experiences that explore literacy, mathematics and science concepts as well as music and movement, art, and history where appropriate. These key learning areas are explored through small and large group projects and also through discovery stations in our indoor and outdoor environment.
At Trendi Tots Kindergarten we believe in the importance of setting up each and every child for success. We understand that when a child first attends formal schooling, it involves a great deal of change for them and their family. To ease this transition, our experienced teachers have a well tailored school readiness program for our Preschoolers to engage in the year before they attend School.
Our curriculum incorporates school readiness experiences such as a formal Transition to School Information Night, pre-reading/ writing skills incorporated into the program, lunch box preparation, social and emotional support. We also arrange excursions to visit the local school so the children can experience a day in a life of a Kindy student within the school environment. During this visit the children have the opportunity to visit:
-Assembly and hall areas
Our teachers network with our local schools to keep up with contemporary teaching practices and liaise with Principals, Kindergarten Teachers and other professionals to visit our service and to provide our families with additional information and value.
For children commencing primary school education the following year we offer additional learning in areas such as language, reading, writing, counting, adding and subtracting and are also introduced to concepts such as wearing a uniform, independently opening their own lunchboxes and snacks and more in the aim to provide exposure and instill confidence in what to expect within a kindergarten classroom.
